What is Osteopathy?
An Osteopath works on your muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nervous system with the aim of achieving optimal structure and function. Treatment techniques such as massage, joint manipulation and gentle stretching are used to increase movement in the joints and relax the surrounding tissues. If required, a stretching and strengthening program may be prescribed to further correct your posture. This will improve the dysfunction now and assist preventing it from returning in the future.
Osteopathy has several principals through which Osteopaths approach the treatment of their patients.
The body is a unit. This means one part of the body cannot be separated from another and therefore treated as a whole. This is also known as being holistic. For example, hip pain may originate in the hip or may be resulting from compensation for knee, ankle or back problems.
The body has a self healing capacity. Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal themselves. Osteopathy gives the body a helping hand by assisting it to heal itself faster and to maintain that healing longer.
Structure and function are interrelated. This means that the body functions best if the structure is optimal. Through ‘hands on’ treatment and postural changes, Osteopathy supports achieving optimal health and balance.
